New releases: Vespers, Whitehorse, more

Americana Music News – New releases and albums of note:

vespersSisters and Brothers Vespers – Just released is the Vespers’ third album; the title is a nod to the band consisting of the Cryar sisters and Jones brothers. The opening lyrics are a mission statement: “Everybody sounds like someone else. We all just want to sound like ourselves.” We first saw the Vespers perform at the Americana Music Association conference about three years ago and the new album shows musical growth, confidence and an undeniably rawer and more distinctive sound.

Cowboy BoudoirKimmie Rhodes – Sunbird Music- We enjoyed Kimmie Rhodes’ performances on the Sandy Beaches cruise and are glad to see this new release.  The album, produced by Gabriel Rhodes and dedicated to the late great Jack Clement is described as “a retro-cowgirl-hippie-chick musical experiment.”

The Limestone KidParker McCollum – Indie Extreme – On his debut album, the 22-year-old McCollum offers up an engaging collection of songs, including the full-throttle “Lucy” and the amiable single “Meet You in the Middle.” Lloyd Maines sits in on pedal steel.

whitehorseLeave No Bridge Unburned Whitehorse – Six Shooter Records – We raved about the debut Whitehorse release in 2012 and this new album may be even better. Luke Doucet and Lelissa McCelland are musically ambitious, building on intense and intimate songs with cinematic flourishes. Favorite song title: “Fake Your Death (and I’ll Fake Mine.)”

Here We Are John and Judy Rodman – Rivermoon Records – 29 years ago, Judy Rodman topped the country charts with “Until I Met You” for MTM Records. She would have later hits, but her recording career wound down by the ‘90s. This new album returns her to the recording studio in a duo with her husband John. This 7-song collection is set for release on March 24.

Reviews: Whitehorse, King’s Bullet, Rich Mahan, Jesse Lafser

By Ken Paulson —
Whitehorse’s The Fate of the World Depends On This Kiss entered the Americana music airplay chart this week and with good reason. Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet are accomplished solo performers and their pairing here is remarkable. The music is ambitious and diverse, from the ornate “Achilles’ Desire” to the sweet “Mismatched Eyes (Boat Song)” to the crunchy underpinnings of “Radiator Blues.”
The album’s highlight, “Devil’s Got A Gun” opens like a James Bond theme, and gives way to impeccable harmonies.
The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss is consistently adventurous and engaging. And it all works.

King’s Bullet is another duo comprised of songwriters: solo artist Loni Rose and Music Row stalwart Trey Bruce. Like Blue Sky Riders and the Waymores, King’s Bullet combines a fresh sound with an impressive history of songwriting success. Bruce was a co-writer on three number one country songs and many more hits.
They’re calling this debut album an EP, but it’s eight songs strong – contemporary country with a little attitude. Best tracks: “Watermelon Sun,” and “I Won’t Be Your Second Choice.”

Rich Mahan’s solo debut Blame Bobby Bare is fun and sometimes just goofy (“Mama Found My Bong,” “Rehab’s For Quitters”), but it’s the soulful “Favorite Shirt” with back-up vocals from Bekka Bramlett that will stick with you. From Snortin’ Horse Records.

The title song from Jesse Lafser’s new album Land in Sight was inspired by Mark Twain’s account of a near-tragedy at sea. That’s a sure sign of a songwriter willing to explore intriguing turf, and this is a solid collection of smart and earnest songs.

Americana Music Festival: Wednesday night preview

Brandi Carlile

Americana Music News — It will be a terrific first night of showcases at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville.  The Wednesday line-up ranges from a salute to Levon Helm (arguably the father of Americana music) to the up-and-coming Shovels and Rope. It’s really a matter of just picking a venue and hanging out for the evening. Every club is deep in talent. The Mercy Lounge, Cannery Ballroom and High Watt are all in the same building, which makes choosing between the Helm tribute, Brandi Carlile and Chris Stamey one of the toughest choices of the week.

We called the new Shovels and Rope album one of the best Americana albums we’ve heard this year and they should be great live at the very cozy Basement.

Nashville’s own Gretchen Peters is always great and she opens the evening at the Rutledge.

You also don’t want to miss Corb Lund, who plays at the Mercy Lounge at 10.

The Wednesday night line-up:

Jonell Mosser breaks into Americana music chart

Jonell Mosser, one of our favorites, breaks into the Americana Music Association chart at #38 this week with “Fortunes Lost, Fortunes Told,” As we noted in our review of the album, Jonell is a stirring and soulful singer who has never had the break she deserves. Maybe that’s changing.

With the Jayhawks still at #1 with “Mocking Bird Time,” the only new entry in the top ten is Will Hoge’s “Number Seven” at #9.

Also new to the chart: The self-titled album from Whitehorse at #36 and Lera Lynn’s “Have You Met Lera Lynn?” at #39.
