Music Matters is a radio feature celebrating free speech in music.
In 1984, during Ronald Reagan’s first term as president, Steven Van Zandt wrote a powerful song explaining that he loved his country even when he deeply disagreed with the government.
Reagan had very successfully used the American flag and other patriotic symbols and language during both his terms. In his song “I Am a Patriot,” Van Zandt asserted his own support for America with these lyrics:
“I was walking with my brother
And he wondered what’s on my mind
I said what I believe in my soul
Ain’t what I see with my eyes
And we can’t turn our backs this time
I am a patriot, and I love my country
Because my country is all I know”
Jackson Browne so admired the song that he recorded it for his 1989 album World in Motion.
