30a_logo_largeThe sixth annual 30A Songwriters Festival, scheduled for Jan. 16-18 in South Walton County, FL has announced its first round of artists, including Graham Nash, Indigo Girls, Leon Russell, Jason Isbell, Shawn Mullins, Sara Watkins, Chely Wright, Bobby Bare Jr., Steve Poltz, Angaleena Presley, Over the Rhine, Glen Phillips, Jeffrey Steele, Jesse Harris, Mary Gauthier, Hayes Carll, Bob Schneider, Ellis Paul, Allison Moorer, Deana Carter, Peter Karp and Sue Foley and David Ryan Harris.

In Nashville:

On Monday, Oct. 27, Sarah Jarosz and the Milk Carton Kids join forces in concert at 8 p.m. at  the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

This just in: The 2014 Americana Music Award Nominees

 in Americana Music, Americana Music Festival

Americana Music News – Robert Ellis, Rosanne Cash and Jason Isbell led nominees for the 2014 Americana Music Awards with three nominations each, including artist of the year,  the Americana Music Association announced today in Nashville.
Ellis’ The Lights From the Chemical Plant was nominated for album of the year, while his “Only Lies” was nominated for Best Song.
Cash’s album The River and the Thread and song “A Feather’s Not A Bird” were nominated, and Isbell was recognized for his album Southeastern and song “Cover Me Up.”
Rodney Crowell rounded out the list of best artist nominees.

Beach Boys, Sarah Jarosz, Deep Dark Woods at Bonnaroo

The final day of the Bonnaroo festival was amazingly eclectic,and the rain held off. That’s as good as it gets.
The Beach Boys are not an Americana band, but they’re arguably the American band. Their 50th anniversary appearance was astonishing. Yes, they show their age and Brian Wilson seemed a little unsettled and lost, but the harmonies (with a little help from their friends, particularly Jeff Foskett) are intact. They played songs from every era of the band and an audience roughly five decades younger sang along with joy and exuberance. Magical.
Sarah Jarosz played a fine set in one of the tents, and engaged the audience throughout. Her stage presence and confidence are now matching her musicianship.
The Deep Dark Woods played the Solar Stage, a small, but very pleasant venue, in front or a small, but very pleasant crowd. Much of the set came from their excellent second album. They also had to endure a mini-interview that included a question about how each of us can make the world a better place. The Deep Dark Woods’ response: Be good to others. We’ll second that.

The 2012 Americana Honors and Awards nominees were announced today in Los Angeles. They’ll be presented at the Ryman Auditorium on September 12 during the Americana Music Festival in Nashville.

Americana music 2011: No Depression’s 50 favorites

No Depression has released its list of the Top 50 favorite albums of 2011, as voted by its fan community. It’s an interesting mix, with Gillian Welch’s The Harrow and the Harvest at the top, followed by a remarkable range of artists, genres, styles and ages.

Some have complained that it’s a surprisingingly mainstream list for an alt-country site, but that’s the nature of a “favorites” list. Name recognition goes a long way, although we don’t see any names on the list that you can’t make a case for.

Sarah Jarosz knows no bounds. Building on her promising debut “Song Up In Her Head,” the new “Follow Me Down” is both a genre-bridging and compelling recording.
Jarosz is a talented mandolinist and banjo player with an inviting voice and an education at the New England Conservatory. She taps all of those resources on “Follow Me Down,” while also drawing on an all-star cast of folk and Americana music artists.
Shawn Colvin contributes harmony vocals on the album opener “Run Away” (co-written by Alyssa Bonagura) and Darrell Scott and Bela Fleck join her on “Come Around.”
Jerry Douglas plays on a striking cover of Bob Dylan’s “Ring Them Bells,”
while the Punch Brothers collaborate on a stark version of Radiohead’s “The Tourist.”
Despite the many talented guests, this is very much Jarosz’ album, at times highly accessible, at others distant and ethereal. All of it is impeccably performed.
We all miss record stores, but this album would have made store managers crazy. Do we file it under “Folk?” “Alternative?” “Americana?” “World Music?”
Of course, in a digital world, that’s all replaced by “If you enjoy the Punch Brothers, you’ll enjoy “Follow Me Down.”
And you will.
