We were a little puzzled when we heard some describe Tony Joe White’s new release as a “blues album.” What Tony Joe White record isn’t a blues album?

Since emerging in 1969 by recording “Polk Salad Annie” and writing the brilliant “Rainy Night in Georgia,” a hit in the hands of Brook Benton in 1970. White has turned out decades of soulful and bluesy recordings, all stamped with his signature sound.

Yet “Bad Mouthin'” is indeed a return to his roots. It’s stripped down and simple, distilling Tony Joe’s  music to its essence. The title cut is also vintage, a long lost song from the very beginning of his songwriting efforts.

Americana Music News – The Americana Music Festival, set for Nashville Sept. 11-16, has just released a new roster of performers. Additions include John Prine and friends, John Hiatt, I’me With Her, the Milk Carton Kids and Niki Bluhm.
This is always one of the best events of the year, and in a town known as “Music City,” that’s saying something.

ama_logo_button_redRandom thoughts and observations about the Americana Music Festival week that was: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band‘s 50th anniversary show at the Ryman was the perfect kick-off and an extraordinary event. Take the four current members of the Dirt Band – Jeff Hanna, John McEuen, Jimmie Fadden and Bob Carpenter – and add Byron House, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas, and you have the ultimate Americana band. Then you add appearances by Jackson Browne, Vince Gill, John Prine, Alison Krauss, Rodney Crowell and returning Dirt Band member Jimmy Ibbotson and you have a singular evening. Recorded for PBS, the show’s few flubs just meant we had a chance to hear the classics twice – most notably Jerry Jeff Walker and the band doing his “Mr. Bojangles. …Based on their most recent album, we had high hopes for Dustbowl Revival and they absolutely delivered, even inspiring some City Winery patrons to dance, a scene we hadn’t witnessed before…

Our single favorite song of the week was Steve Earle doing “Mississippi, It’s Time,” a stirring song about the Confederate flag that reminded us how powerful truly topical songs can be….On the same stage, we saw Loretta Lynn, whose stage show probably hasn’t changed much in the past 40 years – and that’s just fine…We used the new app for our schedule all week and just have one request: build bios into the app for artists and panel members rather than passing us through to websites….We were honored to present the Spirit of Americana Free Speech in Music award to Buffy Sainte Marie on Wednesday night and then sat in when she visited with Middle Tennessee State University students the next day. They loved her energy and sage advice: “Don’t believe any of that junk about genres.”…We saw some tremendous unbilled shows at various receptions around town, including the new trio Applewood Road…. The Americana Music Festival remains the best single week for music in Music City –and that’s saying something.

The Avett Brothers at the 2011 Americana Awards show

Americana Music News – The ever-growing American Music Association announced today that its annual Nashville festival  will feature an outdoor concert on the city’s riverfront on Sept. 20 with the Avett Brothers as headliners.

The concert will anchor the Americana Music Festival and Conference, scheduled to take place Sept. 12-21. Tickets go on sale June 27 for the riverfront concert. Admission is free to conference registrants.

The Americana Music Association also released this list of 2014 festival acts, with more to come:

Chip Taylor regularly attends the Americana music Festival and it’s always great to catch up with him. Duos dominate Americana Music Awards

Americana Music News — Duos dominated at tonight’s Americana Music Association Honors and Awards show at the Ryman.

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell won for album of the year for Old Yellow Moon, and were also  named top duo/group.

A younger pair – Shovels and Rope – was named emerging artist of the year, and also won the song of the year category for “Birmingham.”

Dwight Yoakam was named artist of the year in an evening that honored other music veterans in these categories:

Americana Music Awards tickets on sale

AMAAmericana Music News — Tickets for the 2013 Americana Honors and Awards Show at the Ryman are now available.

Tickets to the Sept. 18 show , will be available online and at the Ryman box office, priced at $85 and $65.

The awards show,   a highlight of Nashville’s musical year, will be hosted once again by Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller will head up the always stellar house band.

Americana Music News – The Americana Music Association has announced an impressive line-up for the Americana Music Festival & Conference September 12-15 in Nashville , with more performers to be named later.

As usual, the roster includes a good mix of accomplished veterans and emerging artists.

Registration opens for 2012 Americana Music Festival in Nashville

Early registration for the 13th annual Americana Music Association Festival and Conference, set for Sept. 12-15, 2012 in Nashville is now open.
This is one of the best music festivals in the nation, and always attracts an intriguing mix of artists. This year, Gregg Allman, Robert Plant, the Civil Wars and a Muscle Shoals tribute were all on the bill.

The AMA is offering an early bird registration of $250 for association members and $350 for non-members. Registration at the convention hotel is also now open.

ACL’s Terry Lickona recaps best of Americana Music Festival

The Americana Music Festival edition of Austin City Limits is being seen across the country on PBS stations this week, and Brian Atkinson  interviewed ACL producer Terry Lickona for the Austin American-Statesman about how the show came about.
You’ll find the full interview at the American-Statesman site, but here’s what he had to say about the highlights of the evening:
“I’m huge fan of the Avett Brothers. The fact that they did a new song that night was definitely a standout. Robert Plant and his Band of Joy with our own Patty Griffin was a great moment. I think probably the emotional highlight of the show came at the very end when Gregg Allman performed “Melissa.” We literally didn’t know until the morning of the show whether he was even going to be there because he’s had some pretty serious health issues. That was certainly a poignant moment and a great way to close out the hour.”
